However, thanks to Beecham\u2019s Pills, launched in 1842 by Thomas Beecham (1820\u20131907), the company experienced a tremendous financial boost that\u00a0drove its early success and enabled its growth into a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">primary<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pharmaceutical business. These popular over-the-counter laxatives \u2014 made with ingredients like aloe, ginger, and soap \u2014 owed their effect mainly to the anthraquinones in aloe, specifically aloin (also known as barbaloin).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the 1950s, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beecham_Group\">Beecham company<\/a> made a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">significant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> leap into modern pharmaceuticals by establishing one of the world\u2019s first dedicated antibiotic research labs, becomi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ng a pioneer in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_penicillin\">penicillin<\/a> development. Beecham Research Laboratories\u2019 involvement with penicillin began with the discovery of the penicillin nucleus, 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA), by its scientists in 1959 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/news\/2016\/june\/brockham-national-chemical-landmark-unveiled\">Brockham Park<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This breakthrough<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> enabled the synthesis of new semisynthetic penicillins<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, advancing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the field of antibiotics.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Building on this, the Beecham company developed and marketed several <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">essential<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> penicillin-based drugs, including Broxil (phenethicillin), Celbenin (methicillin), and Penbritin (ampicillin) \u2014 firmly establishing its position as a leader in antibiotics.
