Halogen derivatives are compounds that contain one or more halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine) attached to a carbon skeleton. Electrophilic halogenation is a reaction where a halogen atom replaces a hydrogen atom on an aromatic ring or an alkene. The mechanism of nucleophilic substitution can be either SN1 (unimolecular) or SN2 (bimolecular), depending on the structure of the substrate and the nature of the nucleophile. Elimination is a reaction where a small molecule (usually water or hydrogen halide) is removed from an alkyl or aryl halide, resulting in the formation of an alkene or alkyne. The mechanism of elimination can be either E1 (unimolecular) or E2 (bimolecular), depending on the structure of the substrate and the nature of the base. Elimination can be used to synthesize various unsaturated organic compounds with different degrees of substitution and stereochemistry.

Addition is a reaction where two molecules combine to form one larger molecule with no loss of atoms. Halogens can undergo addition reactions with alkenes and alkynes to form vicinal dihalides (two adjacent halogens on the same carbon chain). The mechanism of addition can be either electrophilic (halogens act as electrophiles) or radical (halogens act as radicals). Addition can be used to synthesize various saturated organic compounds with different regioselectivity and stereoselectivity.

Halogen derivatives are versatile reagents for chemical synthesis because they offer many possibilities for introducing different functional groups into organic molecules through various reactions.
